The Hyderabad police on Thursday arrested a former Greyhounds constable for allegedly trying to abduct Aurobindo Pharma vice-chairman K Nityananda Reddy.
Obulesh Reddy, currently posted at Central Police Lines, Amberpet, was a member of the anti-Naxal force till March this year.
Sources in the police said when Nityananda was shown the photographs of Obulesh, he recognised the constable as the person who tried to abduct him on Wednesday morning.
The constable, police said, has confessed to the crime.
The police had earlier prepared a sketch of the suspect based on statements of the witnesses. The police had also found a receipt of a super-store in a bag which, according to them, Obulesh accidentally left at the site of the incident near KBR park. After matching the sketch and the CCTV footage of the store, they identified Obulesh as the prime suspect.
According to the police, Obulesh, a native of Porumamilla village in Andhra Pradesh’s Kadapa district, was allegedly involved in several extortion cases and had also threatened a former chief secretary. He had also allegedly “stolen” the AK 47, recovered from the site, from the Greyhounds armoury in Gandipet last year.
He had given the rifle to his colleague, asking him to deposit it in the armoury as he had to go home urgently. However, he got allegedly back the AK-47 without signing for it.
