12:03   Trolls, whatever. My film Is Oscars-bound
Youngistaan is a film very close to my heart, and one of my first films after Faltu which was taken extremely well by critics...

I know there are a lot of people taking the Mickey out of the film going to the Oscars, but it's great to bring a smile on everyone's face and honestly there are few actors who get offended on jokes cracked on them while on the other hand, there are few that make fun of themselves sportingly.

I'm from the latter few, says Jackky Bhagnani, the son of producer Vashu Bhagnani, made his debut in 2009 in his blog.

His film has made it to the Oscar long list as an independent entry.

United States President Barack Obama has asked the US Congress to work with his administration for the closure of the much-criticised terrorist detention centre at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba, the continuation of which he argued is not in America's national interest.

"The Guantanamo detention facility's continued operation undermines our national security. We must close it. I call on members from both sides of the aisle to work with us to bring this chapter of American history to a close," the US president said in a statement.

Obama said he has repeatedly called upon the Congress to work with his administration to close the detention facility at Guantanamo once and for all. "As I have said many times, the continued operation of this detention facility weakens our national security by draining resources, damaging our relationships with key allies and partners, and emboldening violent extremists. Closing the detention facility is a national imperative," he said.

03:02   Sony cancelling 'The Interview' release a mistake: Obama
President Obama says Sony Pictures Entertainment made a "mistake" in canceling its planned release of the movie "The Interview" following a destructive cyber attack the US government says was launched by North Korea.

"Sony is a corporation. It suffered significant damage. There were threats against its employees. I am sympathetic to the concerns that they faced," Obama said. "Having said all that, yes I think they made a mistake."

"We cannot have a society in which some dictator in some place can start imposing censorship in the United States," Obama said, referring to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

"I wish they'd spoken to me first," Obama said of Sony. "I would have told them: Do not get into the pattern in which you are intimidated."

Michael Lynton, CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment, responded to Obama's comments in an interview with CNN, saying the president was "mistaken."

"The movie theaters came to us one by one over the course of a very short period of time and announced that they would not carry the movie," Lynton said. "At that point in time, we had not alternative to proceed with the theatrical release.

"We have not caved, we have not given in, we have not backed down," he said.

02:55   Not yet, says Obama on visiting Cuba
US President Barack Obama today ruled out visiting Cuba in the near future or a White House visit from his Cuban counterpart, days after announcing a resumption of diplomatic relations with the communist island.

"With respect to Cuba, we're not at a stage here where me visiting Cuba or President (Raul) Castro coming to the United States is on the cards. I don't know how this relationship will develop over the next several years," Obama told reporters during his year-end news conference.

"I'm a fairly young man, so I imagine that at some point in my life, I will have the opportunity to visit Cuba and enjoy interacting with the Cuban people. But there's nothing specific where we're trying to target some sort of visit on my part," he said when asked if he plans to visit Cuba.

Responding to a question, Obama said it would be unrealistic for him to map out exactly where Cuba will be.

"But change is going to come to Cuba. It has to. They've got an economy that doesn't work. They've been reliant for years first on subsidies from the Soviet Union, then on subsidies from Venezuela. Those can't be sustained," he said.

"The more the Cuban people see what's possible, the more interested they are going to be in change. But how societies change is country-specific. It's culturally specific. It could happen fast. It could happen slower than I'd like. But it's gonna happen, and I think this policy is gonna advance that," he added.

02:55   Russia seeks 10 years in prison for Putin foe
Russian prosecutors today asked a court to sentence President Vladimir Putin's chief foe to 10 years in prison, but the defiant opposition leader vowed to keep up his fight against the Kremlin regime.

Alexei Navalny, 38, rose to prominence with his investigations of official corruption and played a leading role in organizing massive anti-Putin street protests in 2011 and 2012. But within a month of the government's May 2012 crackdown on the opposition, investigators slapped Navalny with several criminal cases.

In a trial last summer, Navalny was found guilty of embezzlement and sentenced to prison, but he was released the next day after thousands of people protested in the streets of Moscow. He was given a suspended sentence instead.

In their closing arguments in a separate trial in a Moscow courthouse, prosecutors asked a judge today to convict Navalny and imprison him for nine years, with an additional year added because of the prior conviction.

Navalny and his brother Oleg are being prosecuted for allegedly defrauding a French cosmetics company. The company, Yves Rocher, wrote a complaint to investigators, but its representatives have insisted throughout the trial that there never were any damages. The French executive who wrote the complaint also left Russia shortly afterwards and never attended the hearings.

02:54   Rahul Bajaj donates Rs 1.97 crore for Gandhi statue in UK
Leading industrialist Rahul Bajaj has become the largest donor for the Mahatma Gandhi statue to be unveiled at Parliament Square in London in early 2015.

The Bajaj Auto chairman donated 200,000 pounds (Rs 1.97 crore) to the Gandhi Statue Memorial Trust, set up by NRI economist Lord Meghnad Desai to raise funds for the sculpture.

"This is a wonderful gift for the Trust just before the New Year," said Lord Desai, accepting the donation on behalf of the trust.

He added, "Rahul Bajaj epitomises the best of Indian industrialists who have seen the transition of India from colonial rule to independence. When he called me a month ago to express his desire to donate, he was straightforward and impressive".

"He was happy to give the donation because he is a true Gandhian and a believer in those values. The Bajaj family has been associated with Gandhiji for a long time. It is fitting that Rahul Bajaj has made this tremendous gesture," he said.

With the latest donation, the estimated 750,000-pound budget target for the project is expected to be completed by January next year with the launch of the statue expected in the first half of the new year.

02:53   Turkey court arrests TV chief on 'terror' charges
A Turkish court today remanded in custody the head of a national TV network and three ex-police officers on terrorism charges, in a case linked with a top foe of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan that has strained EU ties.

Turkey's state-run TRT television and the Sabah daily said the court has also issued an arrest warrant for Fethullah Gulen, a US-based Turkish cleric who Erdogan now regards as his top enemy. However this was not officially confirmed.

Samanyolu TV chief Hidayet Karaca was placed under arrest on charges of forming a terrorist group, after being detained with over two dozen others in weekend raids on journalists, scriptwriters and police accused of plotting to overthrow Erdogan.

The court however ordered the release of Ekrem Dumanli, the editor-in-chief of the Zaman daily which has repeatedly accused Erdogan of running a corrupt regime and who was arrested in the same raids last Sunday.

Both the Zaman newspaper and the STV channel are linked to Gulen, a one-time ally of Erdogan whom the Turkish strongman has now vowed to crush without mercy.

Dumanli defiantly told hundreds of supporters outside the court after this release that "the press cannot be silenced, media will never succumb to intimidations."
