DENIAL: Ched Evans could claim back £1m over loss of earnings after being imprisoned for rape [CW]

The player was released after serving half of a five-year sentence for raping a 19-year-old girl and has always claimed that he is innocent.

His case was recently fast-tracked by the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) and his legal team are confident they will get the conviction quashed.

If that happens, the former Wales international could be in line for a record payout based on his loss of earnings while banged up.

A lawyer said the figure which shamed Evans, 25, would be entitled to from the public purse will “most certainly be at the top of the scale”.

And his victim would lose out on any financial support.

She had her life turned upside down when vile Twitter trolls exposed her online, forcing her to move towns and change her name.

Her name was again revealed by internet morons last week.

Former Sheffield United striker Evans was found guilty of the rape of a teen in a hotel in Rhyl, in 2011.

He admitted having sex but claimed it was consensual.

His footballer pal Clayton McDonald, 25, admitted having sex with the same woman and was cleared of rape.

The Sheffield United board were reportedly planning to invite him back but more than 150,000 people signed a petition demanding the club do not re-sign him.

Evans’ girlfriend Natasha Massey, 26, stood by him during the case and her millionaire father funded the legal bid to get the case reviewed.

An original appeal against Evans’ conviction was turned down in 2012. But Russ Whitfield, a former police detective from Sussex who runs Liberton Investigations, has since been working on the family’s behalf.

A file was given to the CCRC in July asking for his case to be referred back to the Court of Appeal after the investigator said he had “concerns about the conviction”.

Mr Whitfield added: “We are aware of the sensitivities surrounding this case but every opportunity must be explored to ensure justice is done for all parties concerned.”

A spokesman from the CCRC confirmed the case had been fast-tracked, saying this was “due to a strange combination of things”, adding:

“It is not because he is a footballer, or he is famous.”

Meanwhile, any attempt made by Evans to sign for a club abroad – Genk in Belgium and a Spanish club were said to be interested – will be dashed by ministers.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Justice confirmed:

“Ched Evans remains on the sex offenders’ list and is not free as such.

“He is subject to strict Parole Service supervision and guidelines throughout the remaining part of his sentence.”
