HS Roundup: Vestal blanked by Corning

Corning pitcher Danny Madden registered his 14th and final strikeout with two Vestal base runners aboard in the last of the seventh inning Friday, completing the Hawks’ 1-0 Southern Tier Athletic Conference baseball victory.

A junior left-hander, Madden permitted four hits and did not walk a batter. The lone Golden Bear to advance to third base was left there when Madden struck out Mike Kosty to end the contest at Vestal.

The run came courtesy of Nate Gorges’ sixth-inning double to right-center, which followed a hit batsman and a sacrifice bunt. Vestal pitchers Chris Puzakulics and Anthony Valent limited the visitors to four hits. Bears catcher T.J. Wegmann was 2-for-3 as the lone player with more than one hit.

Susquehanna Valley 6, Johnson City 5: At JC, Kyle Novobilski’s RBI single in the top of the seventh inning plated Austin Whited for the winning run as the Sabers overcame a 5-0 deficit for the win. Cody Pritchard had two hits and two RBI for SV (8-2). Sam Cwikla was 2-for-3 for JC (4-6), including a two-run single in the Wildcats’ five-run second inning.

Windsor 6, Norwich 1: At Norwich, Windsor broke the game open with five fourth-inning runs. Nate Wrighter led the way with 10 strikeouts, holding the Purple Tornado to five hits. He also batted 2-for-5 with an RBI.

Hancock 7, Oxford 2: At Hancock, Zach Worobey was 2-for-3 with two RBI in support of winning pitcher Ryan Slatcher, who let in one earned run in his six innings. Ryan Tooley tripled in a run and Slatcher doubled home another in the Wildcats’ three-run sixth in the Midstate Athletic Conference game.

Lansing 8, Whitney Point 2: At Whitney Point, the Bobcats’ Zack Walker struck out eight in a four-hitter, allowing two hits after the first in the Interscholastic Athletic Conference contest. Brandon Mikola provided 3-for-3, three-RBI backing. The Point’s Jared Bieber pitched six innings and allowed one earned run.

Tioga 14, Newfield 2: At Newfield, winning pitcher Parker Hendershot worked five innings of two-hit ball with six strikeouts and went 4-for-6 with bat in hand. Adam Layman was 4-for-4 for the Tigers (8-1).

Softball

U-E 3, Towanda 0: At the Williamsport Millionaires Tournament, Adrianna Harvey tripled and scored twice for the Tigers, beneficiaries of Melissa Cole’s three-hit, nine-strikeout, zero-walk pitching.

Vestal 5, Corning 4: At Vestal, Kailey Hess hit a two-RBI single in the third inning, helping the Golden Bears edge Corning in STAC. With an out and runners on second and third, Hess’ hit scored Karissa Kohlman and Kat Tibensky, snapping a 2-2 tie. Lauren Lee then scored Hess on a double to center for a 5-2 lead.

Corning rallied in the seventh with a two out, two-RBI double from Angelina Maio, but Lee struck out Brooke Smith to end the game.

Windsor 9, Norwich 2: At Norwich, Mara Kohlbach batted 2-for-4 with a three-RBI triple, while Allison Lockwood and Kasey Kozloski each had two RBI to lead Windsor. Kohlbach earned the pitching win, striking out seven and allowing two runs on five hits. Jordan Sanford and Hannah Eddy each had an RBI for the Purple Tornado.

Susquehanna Valley 12, Johnson City 0: At Johnson City, Sophia Pappas struck out in a two-hitter.

Hancock 24, Oxford 4: At Hancock, Sierra Keesler homered twice, going 3-for-4 with five RBI, and Natasha Picozzi was 3-for-3 with a homer and four RBI for the Wildcats in the MAC victory.

Deposit 13, Harpursville 3: At Deposit, Kassi Cook and Megan Faulkner drove in three runs apiece on a combined 7-for-7 hitting, while MaKenzie Stiles struck out 13 in a three-hitter.

Whitney Point 7, Lansing 1: At WP, Courtney James tossed a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts and Courtney Dunham was 3-for-4 with a two-run home run for the Golden Eagles (8-2) in the IAC win. Taylor Clink also went 3-for-4 for WP.

Track & Field

A meet-record showing by Richard Buchanan was among six top finishes by Susquehanna Valley’s boys as they ran away with the team title in Friday’s Gerry O’Donnell Invitational.

Buchanan zipped through the 1,600 meters in 4 minutes, 19.58 seconds, four seconds faster than the previous standard established by the Black Knights’ Steven Benedict in 2007.

Jake Hawley swept the hurdles races (15.91/59.86) for the Sabers, whose 139 points were 69 clear of runner-up Johnson City.

The girls’ team championship went to Seton Catholic Central with 106 points. Windsor was runner-up with 75. Abbey Yatsko of Dryden improved upon her meet records in the 200 (26.09) and 400 (58.11).

Square Deal Invitational: At Binghamton Alumni Stadium, Corning pulled off a sweep of the team titles. The girls’ 111 total was 36 better than Vestal, and the boys’ 94 were 27 ahead of the host Patriots.

On the boys’ side, Cole Clemons of Ithaca was a two-event individual winner, with a 45-11 shot put and 131-7 heave of the discus.

Corning’s girls got a lift from Taylor Jubilee, winner of the long and triple jumps, as well as Katie Butler, runaway winner with a 7:10.66 clocking in the steeplechase.

Girls Lacrosse

Seton Catholic Central 8, Chenango Forks 5: At Greater Binghamton Sports Complex, the Saints’ Maeghan O’Brien’s four goals included one 10:53 into the second half to break a 5-5 tie. Maddie Williams added three goals for Seton CC and goalie Rose Kane had 10 saves. Brooke Maietta and Hannah Layton each had two goals for the Blue Devils.

Owego 12, Johnson City 11: At Johnson City, Abi Higgins netted the game-winning goal with 55 seconds left in overtime. Higgins led the team with four goals and two assists.

JC led 11-10 late in the second half after Emily Russin scored with 1:39 to play. However, Nicole Cavataro picked up a turnover by the Wildcats and scored on a fast break to tie the game with 16 seconds left and send it to overtime.

Russin led JC five goals and an assist, while goalkeeper Lexy Thorn made a varsity-high 15 saves.

Boys Lacrosse

Vestal 9, Burnt Hills 8: At Vestal, Jared Nelson beat the defense, coming from behind the net to score the winning goal with 2:30 remaining in a non-league game. With the game tied at 6, Sam Barnum scored to take the lead for the Golden Bears. Burnt Hills tied it at 7, but Jake Nelson and brother Jared each netted goal with less than four minutes left.
