Department of Energy Loan to Support Automotive Aluminum for More Efficient Vehicles

WASHINGTON, D.C. –(ENEWSPF)–March 26, 2015.  Today the Department of Energy announced a $259 million loan to Alcoa Inc. under the Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing (ATVM) loan program. The loan will support the company’s Alcoa, Tennessee plant, which will retool to manufacture high-strength automotive-grade aluminum for use in a wide range of passenger cars and trucks. Aluminum  can significantly improve the fuel efficiency of new cars and trucks while maintaining safety. The loan will support an additional 200 full-time jobs at the Alcoa facility.

In response, Jesse Prentice-Dunn, Representative of Sierra Club’s Beyond Oil Campaign, released the following statement:

“Today’s announcement is a win for American workers and the environment. This loan will increase Alcoa’s production of high-strength automotive aluminum, which can significantly improve fuel efficiency of cars and trucks by reducing vehicle weight.

“From Ford to Tesla, automakers are increasingly using stronger, lighter materials to improve vehicle fuel efficiency. We applaud the Department of Energy for supporting automakers and suppliers in their efforts to produce cleaner and more efficient vehicles.”
