Southern Door senior Mitchell Overbeck (45-4) pinned Cedar Grove-Belgium's Danny Gjertson (8-5) during the Division 2 285-pound quarterfinal match Friday afternoon.

Overbeck will wrestle Brodhead/Juda's senior Logan Maurer (47-0) tonight at 7 p.m in the semifinal match.

EARLIER: Southern Door sophomores River Pawelski and Michael Bertrand were eliminated from the state high school wrestling tournament in the Division 2 preliminaries Thursday night in Madison.

Amery sophomore Austin Connor beat Pawelski, 7-2, at 120 pounds, and Evansville/Albany freshman Nolan Kicmol pinned Bertrand in 3 minutes, 6 seconds at 132 pounds.

"They both had tough matches," said Eagles coach Jerry Englebert. "River got a good takedown off the bat, but couldn't do much after that. And Michael wrestled a guy who had a different style than he's used to and he got caught in a throw. (Kicmol) was good."

It was the first state tournament appearances for both Pawelski (35-16) and Bertrand (44-6).

"I think it's a great experience for them and something they can use to motivate them for the coming years," said Englebert. "They're not happy with the results, but they'll definitely get better from it."
