The probe into Jimmy Savile’s reign of abuse at Stoke Mandeville has been blasted as “pointless” after the Government admitted it cost £7.3million.

The inquiry found the paedophile abused 63 people, including many children, over 24 years but it “betrayed’ his victims, said a lawyer.

The 348-page report concluded his attacks were an “open-secret” among staff who failed to report allegations to managers – and that the one formal complaint made by a parent was ignored. But abuse lawyer Liz Dux, representing 168 of Savile’s victims, stormed: “What a pointless exercise.

Probe: Jimmy Savile

“The Department of Health spent more than £7m on an inquiry that said nothing apart from highlighting his depravity. The victims have been let down yet again by failure to establish any type of accountability. Here we had 10 clear examples of children who told qualified staff what happened .”

She pointed out one 11 year old went to a senior nursing sister in charge of the children’s unit but was told to be quiet because of what the DJ did for the hospital. Ms Dux said: “Her father then told management.

“What more did they need to find there was knowledge of Savile’s activities at senior management level? That same victim rang me after reading the report and told me she felt utterly betrayed by it.”
