A man insinuating that he had a gun concealed under his T-shirt robbed a neighborhood market earlier this month and detectives are hoping someone might recognize the robber.

To solicit the public’s help identifying the suspect, detectives from the Broward Sheriff’s Office on Monday released surveillance video that captured the March 14 robbery at Rite Way Food Market.

It was shortly after 11 p.m. when a clerk opened the door for a bearded man he assumed was a customer, said Gina Carter, a Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman.

As the man followed the clerk down an aisle of the store at 13 SE 11th Ave., he appeared to pull the front of his shirt over a gun in his right hand and shoved the clerk toward the register. When the clerk opened the cash drawer, the robber helped himself to several bills and ran away, the video shows.

The suspected robber lingered outside the store for about 20 minutes before the robbery, Carter said. She did not disclose how much money he stole.

The robber had a beard and mustache. He stood about 5-feet, 11-inches tall and weighed about 170 pounds, Carter said. He wore a black T-shirt with the numbers “3657” printed on the front, black shorts and black shoes with brown soles.

Clerks at the convenience store have been victims of violence in the past.

Back in 2002, a clerk was killed during an attempted robbery. Two Delray Beach men are serving life sentences for Abed “Al” Rahman Damiati’s Dec. 3, 2002 death.

Another clerk thwarted the robbery but not the killing when he shot both masked men who burst into the store just before closing time. He shot one robber in the hand and the other in the wrist and leg.

Investigators urge anyone with information about the March 14 robbery to contact Detective Victor Carrasquillo at 954-321-4270.

A reward of up to $3,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest.
