Decline Expected for Panera Bread Earnings

Panera Bread is expected to report lower first-quarter earnings on Tuesday, April 28, 2015. Analysts are expecting a 7% drop in earnings from a year ago. The consensus estimate is $1.44 per share, down from earnings of $1.55 per share a year ago.

The consensus estimate has dipped over the past three months from $1.59. For the fiscal year, analysts are projecting earnings of $6.26 per share. Revenue is projected to be $658.6 million for the quarter, 9% above the year-earlier total of $605.3 million. For the year, revenue is expected to come in at $2.72 billion.

The rise in net income in the fourth quarter snapped a streak of three straight quarters of decreasing net income. In the fourth quarter, net income rose 14% from the year earlier, while the figure dropped 8% in the third quarter, 4% in the second quarter and 12% in the first quarter.

The company has seen revenue increase for two quarters in a row. In the most recent quarter, revenue rose 11% year-over-year to $672.5 million. The quarter before that, it rose 8%.

Panera Bread operates a retail bakery-cafe business and franchising business. Wendy's, also in the restaurants industry, will report earnings on Wednesday, May 6, 2015. Analysts are expecting earnings of five cents per share for Wendy's, down 29% from last year's earnings of seven cents per share. Other companies in the restaurants industry with upcoming earnings release dates include: Jack in the Box, Cosi and Nathan's Famous.
