Need for Speed will be launching this fall for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. Developer Ghost Games isn't sharing much at the moment, but we do know that the game is inspired by the Underground series, will be an open world, day-to-night racer featuring "deep customization" car culture by way of a partnership with EA's own Speedhunters and even an "immersive narrative".

GOTHENBURG, Sweden--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Ghost Games™, an Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ:EA) studio, announced today the return of Need for Speed™ in a full reboot of this storied franchise. The game delivers on what the fans want, and what Need for Speed stands for - deep customisation, authentic urban car culture, a nocturnal open world, and an immersive narrative that pulls you through the game.

“Need for Speed is one of the most iconic names in gaming, and we're returning it to greatness in this reboot,” said Marcus Nilsson, Executive Producer at Ghost Games. “Pulling on our 20 years of history, and then taking a year out from releasing a game, we are making the game we’ve always wanted to. We're listening to the fans and delivering an experience that will capture their imagination and unleash their passion for cars and speed.”

Fuelled by EA's own car culture community, Speedhunters (www.speedhunters.com), Need for Speed will deliver an experience that's grounded in authentic car culture by diving into the rich world of past, present and emergent trends of the urban car scene. This collaboration with Speedhunters in the research and development of the game means the level of detail and real-world authenticity will envelop gamers in an exciting world to discover and enjoy in a way that only Need for Speed can deliver.

Need for Speed will launch worldwide in Fall 2015 on Origin™ for PC , PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system and Xbox One, the all-in-one games and entertainment system from Microsoft.

General manager Marcus Nilsson tells GameSpot:

"Need for Speed needs to understand what it really is,"

What are the core values of the brand, what are the types of experiences that we want to give to gamers? And sometimes it can be hard to do that when you have different development teams in different parts of the world. So the theory, or the strategy, for us was to become the owners of Need for Speed."

"To build that specific game, we needed time and needed to understand from fans: what is the type of game you want us to build?"

"So what we've been doing in this year off is we've been trying to understand what people think Need for Speed should be standing for."

"The end result of spending an extra year on development is a better overall product"

"What people get from this year that we didn't ship a game, is they get a game that delivers on all the core tenets of what Need for Speed should be. And they get that in a very high quality form"

It is certainly looking rather exciting, and we will surely be in for a treat come E3 next month. The Underground series is regarded as the favorite of the long running franchise and rebooting the Need for Speed series towards the fundamentals that made it so great will likely attract many fans of the series and reawaken an interest that has been lost for some time.

It's worth noting that Johan Petersson's tweet suggests that the trailer is actually in-game footage as in gameplay and not a cutscene. I guess we'll find out how the game really looks during gameplay next month.

We will bring you all the new information on Need for Speed as soon as it becomes available, as well as full coverage of the E3 2015 event next month.
