Rogers Communications is offering the new subscription video-on-demand service, shomi for its Internet and cable customers. From today until the end of March next year, nearly 500,000 of Rogers Hi-Speed (Rogers Hybrid Fibre 50 and 60) customers can enjoy endless selection of prior seasons of the most popular shows on TV, cult-classic and fan-favourite films. For other customers, the service is available on a 30-day trial after which the service can be subscribed at $8.99 per month. According to Rogers, the video streaming service can be enjoyed on select tablets and mobile devices, online and on set top boxes on top of being available soon on Xbox 360 and Chromecast.
With Rogers Communications expanding its content offering on its video services, the quadplay operator is taking on the digital services challenge by owning, curating and delivering the most sought after content via multiple channels and on multiple devices. shomi, for example, is a joint venture owned equally by Rogers Communications and Shaw Communications. As multi-screen services become increasingly popular, the ability to stream a video across various connections and devices will become key in the selection of content providers that subscribers will want to subscribe too and weighs heavily in determining the wireless network they will want to connect to. Customers will expect the premium content they subscribe on one connection to eventually be available on all other connections, especially on wireless, enabling them to access their favourite content anytime anyplace when they are out and about.
