A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi attacked Sonia Gandhi, the Congress president said the Narendra Modi government was working vindictively against Rae Bareli, her Parliamentary constituency.

"Modi government is victimising the people by blocking funds for Rae Bareli. The Centre is angry with the Congress; it is targeting the people of my constituency and halting development works here. It is clearly a case of political vendetta," she was quoted as saying on Thursday in the District Vigilance and Monitoring Committee (DVMC) meeting on Thursday. By virtue of being MP of Rae Bareli, Sonia is chairperson of DVMC.

A similar allegation was levelled against the Modi government by Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi who recently said the Centre was blocking funds for Amethi.

Uttar Pradesh Agriculture Minister Manoj Pandey, who was present in the meeting, said they also passed a resolution against the Modi government.

"I proposed the resolution and Sonia Gandhi read out its final draft. We did this because the budget for some centrally-sponsored road works has been blocked in the last six months. The budget for Pradhan Mantri Gramin Sadak Yojana has also been reduced drastically. Sonia was angry with the Centre's pathetic when the district officers informed her about shortage of funds," said Pandey.

"However, the Samajwadi Party government has given Rs 197 crore for the weather beaten farmers of the district," the minister added.

Later, Sonia distributed cheques worth Rs 2 lakh each to family members of the victims of Bachchrawan train accident. The Dehradun-Varanasi Janata Express (14266 DN) trained had jumped the track on March 20, killing 31 passengers and injuring many more. Four deceased persons were from Rae Bareli.

She also handed over an appointment letter in a local school to Sushma Singh, wife of Shivendra Singh, and a cheque of Rs 5 lakh of Kisan Bima Yojana to Rekha Mishra, mother of Ganga Saran Mishra, a farmer. Both had died in the train accident.

The Congress president also unveiled a newly-constructed Nagar Panchayat Bhawan in Dalmau and inaugurated a park in Feroze Gandhi Colony. Her daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who had arrived on Wednesday, accompanied her.

The mother-daughter duo visited various spots to see the progress made in the Rajiv Awas Yojana and drinking water projects and villagers from over half a dozen villages. The Congress president also held a meeting with partymen and asked them to tell the people about the weaknesses and demerits of the BJP led NDA government.
