Wednesday Sector Laggards: Energy, Industrial

Looking at the sectors faring worst as of midday Wednesday, shares of Energy companies are underperforming other sectors, showing a 0.7% loss. Within that group, Helmerich & Payne (NYSE: HP) and FMC Technologies (NYSE: FTI) are two large stocks that are lagging, showing a loss of 7.3% and 4.5%, respectively. Among energy ETFs, one ETF following the sector is the Energy Select Sector SPDR ETF (AMEX: XLE), which is down 0.1% on the day, and down 5.18% year-to-date. Helmerich & Payne, meanwhile, is down 12.49% year-to-date, and FMC Technologies, is down 10.80% year-to-date. Combined, HP and FTI make up approximately 1.6% of the underlying holdings of XLE.

The next worst performing sector is the Industrial sector, up 0.6%. Among large Industrial stocks, Joy Global (NYSE: JOY) and Jacobs Engineering Group (NYSE: JEC) are the most notable, showing a loss of 2.9% and 1.4%, respectively. One ETF closely tracking Industrial stocks is the Industrial Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLI), which is up 0.8% in midday trading, and down 2.87% on a year-to-date basis. Joy Global, meanwhile, is down 7.12% year-to-date, and Jacobs Engineering Group, is down 6.74% year-to-date. Combined, JOY and JEC make up approximately 0.5% of the underlying holdings of XLI.
