United Technologies Corp. named a new chief financial officer Tuesday, filling the position vacated weeks ago when Gregory Hayes replaced Louis Chênevert as chief executive.

Akhil Johri, 53, a former United Technologies executive, will return to the company to take over the top financial responsibilities. Johri left the company years ago for New York’s Pall Corp., a filtration and purification company.

His last post at United Technologies was chief financial officer of UTC Propulsion & Aerospace Systems, the part of the company comprising UTC Aerospace Systems and Pratt & Whitney.

Johri graduated from the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad, India, and is a chartered accountant.

“I am thrilled to welcome Akhil back,” said Hayes. “He is highly respected for his strategic insights, financial skills, and his ability to communicate effectively with Wall Street and our shareholder community.”

Hayes had been United Technologies’ chief financial officer before being named CEO.

Recent news reports have claimed that Chênevert’s decision to retire came as the board was increasingly concerned about his level of focus on the job, his perceived distance from business decisions, and the amount of attention he gave to private interests, such as a 110-foot yacht he was having built in Taiwan.
