Five-star hotel chain would add credibility to Pittsburgh as world-class city
City leaders were expected to meet Tuesday with a delegation from the Four Seasons hotel properties to discuss the possibility of Pittsburgh being one of the newest cities in the world-class hotel chain.Four Seasons representatives will be scouting locations for a potential hotel. Downtown, Lawrenceville, Oakland, East Liberty and the Strip District are all considered as possible locations.WATCH: Sheldon Ingram's report and interview with Mayor Bill PedutoMayor Bill Peduto said Pittsburgh was sought out by the chain because of the city's emerging reputation for sports, tourism and being a center for global innovation.With that kind of metropolitan star power, businesses need plenty of hotels throughout the city to accommodate frequent visits.."They want to be near the universities, they want to be near the Strip, the South Side," Peduto said. "They want hotel options that will be near those places too."Four Seasons is just one of several hotel giants scouting the city, said Peduto, who expects an influx of new hotels in the next five to 10 years that will drive Pittsburgh's status upward for hosting events that have never been held here before, like the Super Bowl and the NCAA Final Four."Oh, absolutely," says Craig Davis, president and CEO of VisitPittsburgh. "You have to have a bunch of different hotels that can help compete for the business."Ten years ago, Pittsburgh would not even be considered for such events due to the lack of hotel rooms. But as Four Seasons scouts the city, it plants a vision that those events can happen sooner rather than later."The Rooneys (owners of the Pittsburgh Steelers) have said they want to bring the Super Bowl to Pittsburgh. We just haven't had enough rooms and the close proximity in order to do it," Peduto said.
