BNY Mellon expands role for treasury exec

Bank of New York Mellon has appointed the head of its treasury services to an expanded role leading its regional operations in Pittsburgh.

Ian Stewart will succeed Vince Sands as chairman of BNY Mellon Pennsylvania in March and will relocate to Pittsburgh from the bank's home base in New York. Sands is retiring, the bank said Thursday.

Stewart will oversee BNY Mellon's local management, community involvement and philanthropic activities in the state. He will keep his job as CEO of treasury services, overseeing BNY Mellon's global payments, trade finance, cash management and other Treasury functions.

Stewart has been with the company since he graduated from Hamilton College in 1983, joining the bank's management development program.

Sands has been with the company for 32 years and played a critical role in building the bank's business serving corporate, government and not-for-profit markets, said spokeswoman Lane Cigna.

“Vince has helped to establish strong relationships with many financial institution clients, and his relationship skills have helped our clients and BNY Mellon navigate certain post-financial-crisis challenges more successfully,” Cigna said.

Don Heberle will remain president of BNY Mellon Pennsylvania, where he helps manage regional operations in addition to his responsibilities with the bank's wealth-management team.

Stewart will continue to report to BNY Mellon President Karen Peetz in his treasury services role. As chairman, Stewart will report to Brian Shea, CEO of investment services.
