UNDER GUARD: Pistorious is a 'vulnerable person,' says prisons chief [REUTERS]

The shamed athlete - who has been jailed for blasting model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp to death - even has two nurses catering for his every need.

He is staying in the hospital section of the Kgosi Mampuru II jail, and has his very own shower, bed, sheets and toilet.

The Bladerunner has managed to avoid the brutal main cells - where gang rapes and violence are the norm.

Instead he shares with just eight other disabled prisoners, compared to the rest of the jail which squashes 80 lags in cells fit for only 40.

The double amputee's harmless new friends include one who also has prosthetic legs, two blind inmates and five who are in wheelchairs.

Prison commissioner Zebilon Monama said he has been placed in the wing "because of his vulnerability".

"It is my responsibility to protect any vulnerable person", he said.

The Olympian's meals will be provided by an outside contractor, rather than him having to slum it in the prison canteen.

Mr Monama added: "They're cooking nice food - we take care of the people."

Pistorius, 27, was jailed on Tuesday for five years but could be out and under house arrest in just 10 months.

His cushy conditions were last night blasted by campaigners.

Karen Ingala Smith, chief executive of domestic and sexual violence charity Nia, said: "Other than the immediate physical needs of his disability, Pistorius should be treated as any other woman killer in that country.

"In South Africa, a woman is killed by a partner of former partner, on average every eight hours.

"But the killing of Reeva Steenkamp was international news and fatal male violence against women is an international issue."

She said he should be dealt with according to the seriousness of his crime, and not his celebrity status.

"This sends out a worrying message about how society values women's lives," she added.

Despite the Paralympian's soft-touch treatment, he has been "crying himself to sleep", it was revealed.

On his first night, he is said to have wept when he was placed in his cell until falling asleep.

A jail source said: "You could hear him. Shortly after the door closed you could hear the tears.

"He was torn up. Broken. The crying went on and on. We think he stopped when he fell asleep. It was really bad."
