They said Dr. Paul Newman, division chief of general surgery, began using the latest generation of da Vinci on March 19 — the first time it’s been used in Central Pennsylvania.

“The da Vinci Xi further advances minimally invasive surgery and maximizes access to all parts of the abdominal and pelvis to allow surgeons to perform complicated cases, including colorectal and joint surgeries,” said Newman, noting that the da Vinci Xi is more user friendly than earlier models. “Robotic technology continues to improve minimally invasive surgery to give patients the benefit of smaller incisions and hope for less pain and quicker recovery.”

The da Vinci Xi System, developed by Intuitive Surgical, can be used across a spectrum of minimally invasive surgical procedures and has been optimized for multiquadrant surgeries in the areas of gynecology, urology, thoracic, cardiac and general surgery, Lancaster General officials said.

By enabling efficient access throughout the abdomen or chest, the da Vinci Xi System expands upon core da Vinci System features, including wristed instruments for more precise movements of tiny instruments inside the patients’ body; 3D-HD visualization that provides surgeons a highly magnified view, virtually extending their eyes and hands into the patient; intuitive motion and an ergonomic design.
