We've long known that Candlestick Park will be transformed over the next few years into Candlestick Point, a development with thousands of homes, hundreds of acres of new parks, and office and retail space. That vision became a little clearer today with the announcement that Lennar Corp., the developer responsible for Candlestick Point, will join with retail developer Macerich to create a 500,000-square-foot "urban outlet" for the neighborhood. Macerich is the developer responsible for the Village at Corte Madera and Broadway Plaza in Walnut Creek. Major retailers in the outlet component of the Candlestick development will be joined by neighborhood retailers, an African diaspora-themed marketplace, movie theaters, a performance venue, and a hotel.
The urban outlet is just part of the major changes happening around Hunters Point, most of them led by Lennar. The San Francisco Shipyard's first phase of homes are already selling, and the Candlestick portion of the project will begin in earnest this winter with the demolishing of the old football stadium. That kicks off $1 billion of new investment and infrastructure slated to take place over the next four years at Candlestick. There will be a new fire station and a new police station, the rebuilding of the Alice Griffith affordable housing community, and the construction of hundreds of acres of parks and open space.
