SALT LAKE CITY — It seems an online satirical publication has the predicted the future.

In November of 2013, The Onion wrote an article announcing that Overstock.com, Inc. would be developing original programming.

On Tuesday, the Utah-based technology retail company announced its plans to launch a new storefront that will rent and sell digital media directly from the website.

“The convergence of entertainment and technology has transformed the retail landscape,” said Patrick Byrne, CEO of Overstock.com. “As Overstock’s traffic and Club O program continue to grow at a rapid rate, offering a digital media streaming service is a natural next step.”

The new platform would provide customers access to movies, TV shows, music, games and other streaming video and original content, according to a press release from the company.

There was no time frame given as to when the new digital media service will become available.
