British translator shot dead as he tried to reason with armed robbers at Sao Paulo bar

A British translator has been shot dead while trying to reason with a pair of gunman who were robbing a bar in Sao Paulo.

Jason Richard Stevens, 39 attempted to persuade one armed crook to lower his weapon as he robbed customers while his accomplice acted as a lookout by the door.

The Scotsman, who was working as a translator in Brazil, was shot multiple times and died on his way to hospital in an ambulance.

Bar owner Fumihiro Yoshima said: "I think the robber shot him because he felt scared at how tall and strong he was." 

The criminals fled the scene in a black Ford Fiesta being driven by a getaway driver after the shooting at around 11pm local time on Wednesday. 

No-one has been arrested over the incident.

The brave 6ft 2inch-expat was playing sinuca, a Brazilian version of snooker, when the robbers struck.

Mr Stevens is thought to have been living in Brazil for several years and is said to have had a school-age daughter.

The incident happened at a bar near the Interlagos F1 circuit.

Mr Stevens was a former pupil of St Paul's School in Sao Paulo, where his mother is a teacher.

Headteacher Louise Simpson said: "Our most sincere condolences are with her and her family at the time of this tragic event.

"The school community has been informed and has offered support and sympathy to the family."

A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesman confirmed Mr Steven's death. 

He said: "We have offered consular assistance to the family at this difficult time."
