Melbourne: More than 80 per cent of Australians have voted for young Prince William to be king instead of his father, a new poll has revealed.
Prince Charles is earmarked to succeed his mother Queen Elizabeth, who currently is celebrating her Diamond Jubilee after 60 years on the British throne.
But it seems the vast majority of Australians have a soft spot for her grandson William following his fairytale wedding to Kate Middleton, a commoner.
The survey of 1000 Australians from Ancestry.com.au has found 81 per cent of respondents want the29-year-old prince to become the next king, News.com.au reported.
Tasmanians were the strongest supporters of Prince William’s ascendancy at 90 per cent.
Prince Charles trails a long way behind even with his biggest fan base, the ACT, which only registered 25 per cent support for his ascendancy.
There is also solid support in South Australia for Prince William to leapfrog his father onto the throne, with 89 per cent of participants favouring the handsome young prince.
The ACT is rife with supporters of an Australian republic, 63 per cent of those surveyed saying it was time to sever ties with Buckingham Palace.
The survey also indicated the country remains divided over whether we should remain subjects of the British crown.
Forty-eight per cent of respondents want Australia to transition to a republic, but 52 per cent still favour the idea of having a monarchy.
Over 60 per cent of Australians strongly associate corgis or the Union Jack with the Queen and England.
