MSI GTX 970 stops sending signal and kills machine

Hello folks,

I am having a massive issue with my new MSI 970 at the moment. I've had several major crashes in the last two days since installing the card whenever I play games which are quite graphically intensive.

Games like DOTA 2 and CS GO work perfectly fine, but whenever I play anything else which could be considered graphically intensive, the screen goes black, I lose my sound, and I am forced to turn off my PC. It doesn't die itself, persay, but nothing works. It shuts down immediately after I touch the power button.

I have a brand new 750 Watt Corsair PSU, so I'm sure that it's not related to my power supply.

My motherboard is a Gigabyte Z68AP-D3, which I've had for quite some time.

I have an Intel I5 2500 processor.

I have 8gb of Corsair 1600mhz ram.

None of my gear is overclocked in the slightest and I've never attempted to touch voltage or XMP settings.

I have tried resetting the CMOS by removing it, but no joy. Everything is seated properly and connected up properly and I've tried so many different things to fix this issue but I am truly stumped now.

I appreciate any and all advice you guys can give me, here. I'll respond to each and every reply as soon as possible.

Cheers,

Ross

This is the relevant information from WhoCrashed for the actual crashes I've had these last few days

With regards to the comments about the PSU, I am more than willing to return the PSU and buy a different one, however I don't understand why a 750 Watt power supply would be insufficient for my current build. I doubt that the PSU is the issue, but if anyone can tell me precisely why it is the route of the problem then I shall RMA it and buy another.

The Corsair CX is manufactured by Channel Well using every corner cutting method available to reduce cost and maximize profits. One of the main problems is the cheap capacitors in the secondary. These units often cannot meet advertised wattage, and have poor voltage regulation and ripple suppression which wreaks havok on graphics cards.

Thank you very, very much for this information.

As you may have guessed from my username, I don't have much money to spend on gaming related things and have had to save for the PSU and GTX 970 for quite some time, so price was very high on my concerns when I went to buy the PSU. Do you reckon you could recommend a few alternatives to me which would be suitable for my build?

I stupidly assumed the Corsair label would provide quality regardless of the product, and straight up just bought the CX750 without doing much research. This is the first time Corsair has let me down.

Cheers.

It's easy to get fooled by the sticker brand. Corsair doesn't actually manufacture PSUs. They contract them to various OEMs. Some of those are very good OEMs like Seasonic. Some...not so good.

This is a really good deal on a high quality PSU. It's built by Super Flower (EVGA doesn't make stuff either) on the Golden Green platform.

Sorry to continuously be a bother here, but I like in the UK and so that particular website is not really suited for me, so is the link below the exact same PSU? I'm pretty sure it is, but I want to be sure.

By the way mate, I posted the results from 'WhoCrashed', would you be able to assist me in reading into the issue further so I can understand what exactly the results mean?

Found a G2 unit but it's priced at like $120, so the one I linked is basically the best price I can get in the UK for the PSU you mentioned.

While we're at it, do you think this is definitely the issue I'm having here? I'd hate to send back my PSU, buy a new one for even more money and then have it not make a difference, y'know?

I'm 99.9% certain.

Quick update, I've taken my 970 out and put my old EVGA GTX 660 back in with the CX750 PSU and I haven't crashed yet. Could it be that the card was the issue after all, or is the PSU just not generating enough power for the 970, which is a far more powerful card?

Thanks,

Ross

You won't know until either A) you test it in your new PSU. or B) You test it with someone else's high end PSU.
