CLINTON, Iowa (Nov. 26, 2014) – “Don’t take away our Target.”

That’s the plea from an Iowa community where the store is set to close, reports WQAD. Earlier this month, Target announced plans to close 11 stores, including the Clinton location (a central Indiana Target at 8448 Center Run Drive in Castleton is also set to close).

The store has been in the Iowa community for 41 years. Nearly 80 people work there.

Community leaders rallied at City Hall on Tuesday and are hoping for a chance to make their case in front of Target’s corporate leaders. They’ve signed petitions and gotten the word out on social media.

They say, while Target blames sluggish sales for the closure, the chain isn’t considering a $35.8 million economic redevelopment plan.

Will those efforts bear fruit?

According to the TV station, Target has thanked the community for its support but said the decision was final. The store is scheduled to close on Jan. 31, 2015.

“I’m disappointed,” said Clinton shopper Mary Elliott. “I like coming here.”
