Broomfield’s Level 3 Communications came one-step closer to completing its $5.7 billion acquisition of Littleton’s TW Telecom with Friday’s approval by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission.

The deal now awaits shareholder approval, which is expected at Level 3’s shareholder meeting on Tuesday.

The two local Internet network operators have complementary operations, Jeff Storey, Level 3 chief executive, said in an earlier interview. Level 3 provides the Internet backbone for data over long distances. TW Telecom’s network targets office buildings in metro areas Level 3 doesn’t reach.
