RALEIGH, N.C. – Cloud-computing software maker Citrix Systems said it would cut about 900 jobs as part of a restructuring to improve operational efficiency.

According to Reuters and other sources, Citrix would cut about 700 full-time and 200 contractor jobs. The company, which had 9,166 employees at the end of 2013, reported a sharp fall in fourth-quarter net profit and issued a forecast for revenue and adjusted profit for the current quarter that fell short of analyst expectations.

It’s unclear how the Raleigh headcount, about 600 employees, will be affected.

Citrix CEO Mark Templeton commented on the announcement via Facebook:

My dear friends,

Today we announced that Citrix is restructuring to better align to the needs of our customers, but along with this essential move, comes the painful step of saying farewell to some of our friends and colleagues.

First and foremost, I want to assure you that we are going to take good care of our employees – both those who leave and those who stay on the team.

The decisions we make to ensure the vitality of our company seem nearly impossible sometimes. This is, by far, the toughest decision any business manager ever makes – especially for me. Like you, I wish there were a better option, but when I look ahead, I know we’re taking the necessary actions to position us for growth – in revenue, profitability, and employment.

We are fortunate to have a remarkably talented team. I thank every one of you for the gift of your ideas, energy, and effort. I am inspired by what you create, and how you create it. And while that makes this decision even more difficult, it also gives me confidence that we can continue to strengthen Citrix as we pursue our ambitious goals.

Sincerely,

Mark
