A body pulled from the South Saskatchewan River Saturday afternoon was that of a man missing from his Saskatoon group home.

Ivan Hunchak, 58, was reported missing Friday after he had not been seen since Thursday night. Police said he was missing from his group home on the 800 block of Avenue P North. He drove a motorized wheelchair and had several medical conditions, including multiple sclerosis, according to police.

On Saturday, officers were called to the river bank near Victoria Park after the discovery of human remains. Rescue crews from the fire department managed to pull the body of a man from the river before a tow truck helped remove a wheelchair from the water.

Police did not confirm the body’s identity but members of Hunchak’s family told CTV on scene that the body was that of the missing man.

Police said circumstances surrounding the death are not suspicious.
