Chubb: Meteors primed for ‘acid test’
Meteors, one of oldest Ladies basketball clubs in this country, have strengthened their squad in recent months with the American Ganser sisters — Katie and Christine — showing impressive early-season form while former UL Huskies star Aoife McDermott is another key signing.
Last weekend Meteors beat Singleton’s Supervalu Brunell but coach Eoin Chubb is under no illusions of the task that awaits his side.
Chubb said: “We got a good test against Brunell and came through with flying colours but the benchmark Montenotte have set is where every club wants to be. We are playing relatively well but this is the acid test.”
Mark Scannell is guiding the fortunes of Team Montenotte and has warned his side against complacency.
“Meteors are the most improved side in this league and with two Americans and Aoife McDemott — plus an array of international players — they will be tough opposition for any team,” Scannell said.
In the Men’s Premier League, Belfast Star were unlucky not to get a home win last week against UCD Marian and the visit of the champions Killester to the Methodist College in Belfast is certain to attract a bumper attendance.
The Dublin side lost at home to C&S UCC Demons last week and will be keen to get back to winning ways but Star coach Neil McCotter has promised them a stern challenge.
“We need a win and playing Killester is always a test of your team’s character but we will be ready to test them.”
Leaders C&S UCC Demons are showing impressive form but will be wary away to DCU Saints on Sunday.
Neptune coach Ger Noonan is hoping his team can bounce back from last week’s defeat to basement side Templeogue when they begin their double-header tomorrow with a clash against UCD Marian at Belfield.
On Sunday, Neptune host UL Eagles with coach Noonan confident his side can return to winning ways.
He vowed: “We were abysmal in defence against Templeogue but the players are defiant they can win.”
Swords Thunder showed enough on Sunday last against C&S UCC Demons to suggest they can take maximum points against Dublin Inter.
Singletons Supervalu Brunell were easily defeated by Meteors in the Women’s Premier league last week and Liffey Celtics are bound to pose them problems at Gurranabraher tomorrow.
In the remaining Women’s Premier league games, WIT Wildcats will be hoping to get back to winning ways against Killester and UL Huskies dismal season may continue despite having home court advantage against DCU Mercy.
