Johnson began his college career at McLennan (Texas) Community College, where was a two-time All-American. He was honorable mention as a freshman before making the first team in 1976-77.

After finishing his college career at Baylor, where he was a two-time second-team All-American, Johnson was selected by the Seattle SuperSonics in the first round (seventh overall) of the 1979 draft.

Seattle traded him to the Pistons on Nov. 23, 1981 for Greg Kelser and Johnson played 10 seasons with the Pistons before finishing his career with San Antonio in 1991-92.

In 798 games with the Pistons, Johnson averaged 12.7 points, 3.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists. The Pistons retired his No. 15.
