CAMBRIDGE — Akamai Technologies Inc., which provides Internet content delivery services, could hire as many as 1,000 people this year, its chief executive told the Boston Business Journal.

CEO Tom Leighton said the company may also make additional acquisitions. It last year bought Florida-based Prolexic Technologies for a reported $370 million.

Leighton said Akamai’s “big push” this year is to hire for its newly formed Emerging Mobile Products unit.

The company reported 2014 sales of nearly $2 billion, up 24 percent.
