Fastenal Co., which distributes industrial and construction equipment, said Tuesday it plans to expand its Indianapolis operation and add 60 jobs by 2016.

Based in Winona, Minn., the company will invest $13 million to build and equip a 167,000-square-foot addition to its 900,000-square-foot distribution center by year’s end at 6003 Guion Road on the Northwestside, according to a news release.

The expansion will allow Fastenal to extend its national reach.

“Indianapolis’ geographically central location enhances our ability to service our customers in a timely manner,” Terry M. Hanley, regional operations manager of Fastenal, said in a prepared statement.

Hanley said state and city incentives encouraged the company to expand in Indianapolis. The Indiana Economic Development Corp. offered Fastenal up to $285,000 in conditional tax credits based on the company’s job creation plans. Indianapolis also approved additional tax incentives.

Fastenal employs 18,000 people worldwide, including more than 950 in Indiana. The company will begin hiring for the new positions this summer.
