M-222 bridge over U.S. 131 in Martin to be replaced; work starts Feb. 9

The bridge on M-222 over U.S. 131 in Martin will be replaced this year.

KALAMAZOO, MI — Crews with the Michigan Department of Transportation will start work in February to replace the M-222 bridge over U.S. 131 in Martin.

Construction is set to start on Monday, Feb. 9 in Allegan County.

M-222 will be closed during bridge reconstruction, with traffic detours posted for U.S. 131 and M-89. There will be nighttime lane closures on U.S. 131.

The bridge is expected to be open to traffic in time for the B-93 Birthday Bash on June 13 and 14 at the U.S. 131 Motorsports Park in Martin. The entire project is expected to be wrapped up by July 9.

Nick Schirripa, MDOT spokesman, said the bridge is being replaced because of its age. He said crews are starting construction earlier than usual in order to get the bridge done earlier.

He said big construction projects will be staggered this year. In Kalamazoo County, MDOT is expected to rework the interchange of Sprinkle Road and I-94, and also is expected to replace the Stadium Drive bridge over U.S. 131 this year.
