CHENNAI: A 38-year-old lawyer was allegedly hacked and stoned to death by a group of lawyers after the Egmore Bar Association election results were declared on Friday night.
The deceased has been identified as C Stalin of Villivakkam.
Police said Stalin was celebrating the victory of Chandan Babu, who was elected as the president of the bar association. He suffered injuries on his back and hands when a group of ‘armed lawyers’ attacked him.
Stalin ran out of the court premises on the Adityanar Salai for his life. However, a row of parked vehicles opposite to the court blocked his way. He was cornered by the gang and some of them threw stones at him and others hacked him with sharp weapons.
Stalin, who suffered severe injuries on his head, collapsed on the road and died. Other lawyers escaped from the scene immediately.
On being informed, senior police officers, including Triplicane deputy commissioner of police Anil Kumar Giri, rushed to the spot at 1.30am. The lawyer's body was sent to the Government General Hospital for autopsy.
The Egmore police registered a murder case against lawyers Michael, Logeshwari, Muniyandi and 27 others. Michael was one of the candidates in the elections.
Police picked up Logeshwari and Muniyandi in connection with the murder and were being interrogated.
