Wrestling: Shorthanded Eagles shine in 21-team meet

Door County Advocate

Southern Door filled only eight of the 14 weight classes, but it won three individual titles and placed second Saturday in the 21-team Sheboygan North Raider Invitational high school wrestling tournament.

Moline, Ill., won the meet with 199 points, while Southern Door scored 149.5. Sheboygan Falls 138, Stevens Point 126, and Germantown 113 rounded out the top five.

The Eagles were missing several wrestlers because of illness, including regulars Logan Walker and Zach Marchant, but Hunter Pawelski, Tory Jandrin and Mitchell Overbeck won titles and River Pawelski and Michael Bertrand finished runners-up in their weight classes.

“The guys wrestled great,” said Eagles coach Jerry Englebert. “As a team, we finished runner-up in front of several full teams. The only team ahead of us came in with a full squad and a very nice team. They would have been tough to beat even with our full team, but it would have been close.”

Hunter Pawelski dominated the 138-pound weight class, as he pinned his way to the title. Pawelski (30-6) pinned Valders’ Matt Pekarske in 1 minute, 31 seconds, Oshkosh West’s Senna Sieber in 1:57, and Elkhart Lake’s Brock Bonebrake in 1:37. Bonebrake (27-3) is ranked No. 9 in Division 2.

“Hunter looked great all day and won the award for the fastest pinner of the tournament with three first-period pins,” said Englebert. “Hunter is wrestling well and getting back to his form from last year.”

Jandrin also pinned his way to the title at 182 pounds, where he was seeded fifth and beat the Nos. 1, 3 and 4 seeds.

Jandrin (29-8) pinned Sheboygan Falls’ Alex Rodriguez in 1:36, Menasha’s Josh Conlon in 2:53, Shoreland Lutheran’s Zach Brug in 3:47, and Stevens Point’s Paul Zalewski in 5:24.

“Not only did Tory pin each wrestler, he established control of each match, worked technique and dominated start to finish,” said Englebert. “Definitely his best wrestling of the year.”

Overbeck beat Oshkosh West’s Jacob Heath, 8-1, to win the heavyweight title. Overbeck (31-4) pinned Shawano’s Damon Braatz in 55 seconds in the quarterfinals and Milwaukee Lutheran’s Logan Moody in 3:36 in the semifinals.

“Mitchell came in as the No. 1 seed and showed why,” said Englebert. “He dominated each match from the opening whistle.”

River Pawelski (25-11) and Bertrand (32-4) placed second at 126 and 132 pounds, respectively, with two pins each. Little Chute’s Lars Shrader beat Pawelski, 8-3, and Random Lake’s Jon Mudlaff defeated Bertrand, 8-2, in the finals.

Southern Door wrestles Saturday in the Sheboygan South Duals.

AT DE PERE: Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol went 2-3 and placed seventh Saturday in the Redbird Duals.

The Clippers beat Appleton East (60-12) and Kiel (51-21) and lost to Tomahawk (66-9), Green Bay West/Southwest (51-19) and West De Pere (37-36).

Mike Wiegand and Alec Fischer finished 3-2 and Matt Wiegand won both of his contested matches to lead the Clippers.

Mike Wiegand beat Tomahawk’s Kegan Jach, 7-4, and West/Southwest’s Alec Basten, 12-4, and pinned Appleton East’s Trenton Waring in 3:15 at 138 pounds.

Fischer beat West/Southwest’s Robert Guesnon, 10-5, at 152 pounds and pinned West De Pere’s Zac Sierra in 3:47 and Appleton East’s Waring in 3:38 at 145.
