US stocks opened modestly higher on August 23, 2013 as the market got a jolt from Microsoft's announcement that chief executive Steve Ballmer will retire within the next 12 months. The computing giant's shares soared 7.2 percent to $34.70 in early trade as Ballmer, who succeeded Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates in 2000, said the company would search for a new leader who can take charge of its "transformation to a devices and services company." Wall Street overall followed the global trend higher in markets. Thirty minutes into trade the Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 4.25 points (0.03 percent) at 14,967.99. The broad-based S&P 500 added 1.41 (0.09 percent) at 1,658.37, while the Nasdaq Composite jumped 11.13 (0.31 percent) to 3,649.84. The markets showed no hangover from the shock of the Nasdaq's three-hour shutdown Thursday on technology woes. AFP PHOTO/Stan HONDASTAN HONDA/AFP/Getty Images ORIG FILE ID: 522272939

If you didn't have enough fun watching earnings roll in last week, your little heart will go pitty-pat the week of Oct.27.

Monday: Denny's (DENN) weighs in, but it's no early bird special: The restaurant company will serve up its earnings report after the market closes. Analysts expect 9 cents a share. And if you get too anxious waiting, Merck (MRK) probably has a pill for it. The analysts' consensus: 88 cents a share.

Tuesday: Dupont (DD) is in the pipeline. Analysts expect 53 cents a share. And after the smoke clears and the market closes, Electronic Arts (EA) will appear on investors' screens. Analysts would like the stock to score 53 cents a share. If that all gives you a headache, Pfizer (PFE) is expected to soothe investors' nerves with third-quarter earnings of 55 cents a share.

Wednesday: Investors hope they will be in good hands when Allstate (ALL) reports earnings. Analysts expect $1.33 a share. And they'll be looking for direction from Garmin (GRMN), expected to earn 71 cents a share.

Thursday: American Tower (AMT) will broadcast its earnings; analysts hope for 57 cents a share. And if you're getting a bit sleepy, Starbucks (SBUX) will serve up its earnings after the market closes. Analysts hope for 74 cents a share.

On Friday, no one on Wall Street wants to be scared. They're hoping Chevron (CVX) pumps up $2.56 per share and ExxonMobil (XOM) fills up investors' tanks with $1.73 per share.
