Guess Which MCX Merchant Is Standing By Apple Pay?

Meijer finds itself in a paradox as the Midwest retailer that accepts Apple Pay, but is also part of MCX, a conflicting retail group.

While some MCX supporters–notably Rite Aid and CVS–have caused a stir by accepting Apple Pay and then blocking it, Meiker is standing firm with plans to support both, according to an mlive.com article.

“If these retailers break their contracts, they will face steep fines for doing so,” the New York Times reported. “The problem is that under the terms of their MCX contractual agreement, they are not supposed to accept competing mobile payments products like Apple Pay, according to multiple retailers involved with MCX, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. If these retailers break their contracts, they will face steep fines for doing so, these people said.”

Still, the mlive.com article suggests Meijer has no plans to drop MCX or Apple Pay. Meijer has had NFC technology in its stores for five year for its branded MasterCard and Visa credit cards for customers to use other digital wallets. Despite other major retailer’s backing off the Apple Pay bandwagon, Meijer’s policy on digital wallets hasn’t changed, Frank Guglielmi, Meijer spokesman, told mlive.com. Mobile pay technology is already available at its 212 stores, the article said.

“We have had the technology in our stores to accept mobile wallets for several years now,” Guglielmi said in the article. “If a customer has Apple Pay capability, our hardware works with it. We don’t plan to remove or disable these systems.”
