Some were cute, mushy and adorable, while a few of were ferocious! Yet each one of them attracted people to watch them in awe.
The Dog show organised by Rotary Club, Kennel Club and Department of Animal Husbandry at the Police Parade Ground here on Sunday, saw the participation of dogs of various breeds.
Over 150 canines of some 20 breeds, both Indian and foreign, took part in the show which was held after a gap of 15 years in the city, according the organizers. Being held on a Sunday, the show attracted a large gathering of canine lovers.
The foreign breeds included: Pug, Poodle, Doberman, Labrador, Dash Hound, Boxer, St. Bernard, great dane, German shepherd, Dalmatian, Retriever and Rottweiler, while Indian breeds included: Mudhol hound, Pashmi and Carvan.
Speaking to presspersons, Pranesh Jagirdar, the senior veterinary officer said that the objective of the event was to encourage more people to raise Dogs as they beneficial to people in many ways.
“The dogs, besides a great companion and loyal to their owners, also do the great job as guard to the property”, Dr. Jagirdar said.
He however regretted that owing to negligence, several native dogs were reaching extinction and there was an urgent need to protect and preserve breeds such as Mudhol, Pashmi and Carvan.
Earlier, he urged District Incharge Minister, M.B. Patil who inaugurated the show, to make sure that a branch of Mudhol Dog Research Centre, located in Bagalkot district, be set up in Vijayapura city as well.
Mr. Patil instructed the Deputy Commissioner, D. Randeep to prepare a plan for it for submitting a proposal to the government.
