Hyderabad/Lucknow: Accusing that the successive governments in Uttar Pradesh botched up the investigation into the 1987 Hashimpura Muslim killing, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi Friday announced to challenge the court acquittal of the killer cops.
"The successive state governments botched up the investigation. It is their moral and legal responsibility to file an appeal. But, since they are not coming forward, I will personally fund the legal expenses of victims for filing the appeal," Asaduddin Owaisi said while talking to th media.
Sixteen policemen were acquitted by a court here on March 21 of the charges of murder and other crimes in the 1987 Hashimpura massacre case in which 42 Muslims were killed in Uttar Pradesh's Meerut city.
The court gave them the benefit of doubt and said lack of evidence has failed to establish their identification in the case.
The killings had allegedly occurred during riots in Meerut city when the victims were picked up from the Hashimpura Mohalla of the city by personnel of the 41st Battalion of the PAC during a search operation.
"These were killings done by the state itself, but perpetrators have not been punished," Owaisi said.
To a query on firebrand BJP MP Yogi Adityanath's visit to the city on Saturday for a meet, Owaisi said, "A single person cannot be a threat to a country or a state."
"My personal view is that no one should be banned (from entering a city or addressing public meets). And if anyone commits a wrong (by giving hate speech), then a case should be filed (against such person).
"But if their (hate) speeches result in riots, then definitely such people should not be allowed (to address rallies)," Owaisi added.
