Garmin Wins Silver State Patent Lawsuit

Garmin International, Inc., a subsidiary of Garmin Ltd. (GRMN), said Friday that it has emerged victorious in the lawsuit brought by Silver State Intellectual Technologies, LLC.

A jury sitting in the United States District Court for the District of Nevada found that Silver State's patents were invalid. The decision is subject to appeal.

"Garmin and others pioneered the GPS navigation industry years before Silver State filed its patents. We're pleased that the jury rejected Silver State's insidious attempts to take credit for the hard work and innovative products of real companies," said Andrew Etkind, Garmin's vice president and general counsel. "It remains an unfortunate and serious problem that operating companies like Garmin are so often subject to meritless patent suits based on bogus patents owned by non-operating companies."
