Memorial Day observances today in the Ann Arbor area

Memorial Day is the time to remember the sacrifices of American veterans. A number of observances were scheduled over the weekend.

Arborcrest Memorial Park held its 33rd annual Memorial Day ceremony on Sunday.
Congresswoman Debbie Dingell, Representative Adam Zemke, Army veteran John Kinzinger, former astronaut Tony England, Himanshu S. Singh, MD, associate director at the VA Health System, and Alexandria Strother, Miss Washtenaw County 2014, each gave an address.

The following take place on Monday:

Ann Arbor:
The Glacier Highlands Memorial Day parade will begin at 10 a.m. at Greenbrier Park. The parade ends at Glacier Highlands Park. At 10:40 p.m. there will be a memorial service in Glacier Park which will be followed by a reception that will include a bald eagle from the Leslie Science and Nature Center.

Chelsea:
The annual Chelsea Memorial Day parade will start at 10 a.m. in the municipal parking lot downtown. The parade will end at Oak Grove Cemetery with a ceremony honoring veterans. The parade is hosted by the Herbert J. McKune American Legion Post 31.

Dexter:
The Rotary Club of Dexter will be sponsoring the 2015 Dexter Memorial Day parade. The parade will start at 10 a.m. At the conclusion of the parade, there will be a Memorial Day ceremony.

Manchester:
The Manchester Memorial Day parade begins at the Main Street Bridge by the American League at 11 a.m.

Milan:
The annual Milan Memorial Day parade will begin at 9 a.m. This year, it will begin with a ceremony at Marble Park Cemetery. After the ceremony, the parade will continue to another ceremony at the Veterans Wall of Honor. The American Legion Auxiliary will place wreaths in honor of those lost at sea on Ford Lake. After that ceremony, the public is invited the American Legion for free hot dogs.

Saline:
Saline's Memorial Day parade will start at 10 a.m. on Michigan Avenue.

Ypsilanti:
The Ypsilanti Memorial Day procession will start at 9 a.m. The procession will start on Huron Street and end at Highland Cemetery.

Additional events:

VFW Military display

The VFW Graf-O'Hara Post 423 will be have an open house and military display from May 22 through Memorial Day. Items on display include uniforms, medals, weapons, personal items and a large model of the U.S.S. Missouri, on loan from the University of Michigan ROTC. The open house and display is free to the public and will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. VFW Post 423 is located at 3230 S. Wagner Road in Ann Arbor.

Ypsilanti Community Choir

The Ypsilanti Community Choir will be having a Memorial Day tribute at 1 p.m. The tribute will take place at the Vietnam War Memorial at 7200 South Huron River Drive in Ypsilanti Township.

Yankee Air Museum

The Yankee Air Museum will have a short event in the exhibit hall starting at 9 a.m. Retired Marine Sgt. Kenneth Bowen will deliver a keynote address. The Belleville Community Chorus and singer Sarah West will also perform at the ceremony. The museum will be open until 12 p.m. The Yankee Air Museum is located at 47884 D Street in Belleville.
