Formula One’s authorities have issued an unprecedented edict commanding “total silence” during the national anthem in front of President Vladimir Putin for Sunday’s Russian Grand Prix.

As the sport continues to cow to President Putin’s wishes, amid fierce security for the race, the teams were sent an email on Saturday night from Bernie Ecclestone’s Formula One Management issuing the fresh rules.

The email read: “We kindly request that during the national anthem, there is to be total silence on the starting grid.

“It has been alleged that Formula One is one of the most ill-mannered sports in relation to the national anthem and complaints from fans, public, and political institutions, are now too heavy to ignore.”

Silence has never been required of the teams and drivers at a race before apart from in commemorations. King Juan Carlos of Spain or Prince William were not afforded such special treatment.
