Awesome auroras light up the night sky

Doyle Rice
USA TODAY
The aurora shines over Anchorage Tuesday morning just before sunrise.

Nature put on a fantastic light show across much of the Northern Hemisphere Tuesday night, as the aurora borealis (aka Northern Lights) made an appearance thanks to a strong geomagnetic storm.

Some of the best shots were from Europe, but North America also got in on the action. There were also sightings of the aurora australis in the Southern Hemisphere.

With the geomagnetic storm waning, the chance for aurora sightings Wednesday night is rather low, but not out of the question, especially the farther north you go.
