Venice Storage Facility Tenants Anxious To Assess Fire Damage
VENICE (CBSLA.com) — Renters at a burned-out Venice storage facility were unable to access their units Monday to assess the damage.
KNX 1070's Ed Mertz reports about 300 firefighters worked in shifts for more than 12 hours to quench the flames at Extra Space Storage on Venice Boulevard.
Eight firefighters were injured in the blaze that started Saturday evening.
The company had a district manager on site answering questions from customers who showed up, but customers were not allowed in to the facility.
One tenant, Joanna, came from her Malibu home to get an update on the status of her 50-inch flat screen, a Blu-Ray player and other equipment. She said she's an art dealer and has been a tenant with Extra Space Storage since they opened.
"I would've like to have received an email already from them," she said. "I had some commercial art pieces in there which I was gonna give to charity."
Arson investigators said they expected the investigation to last a few days. The fire is believed to have started on the east side of the building, most likely on the second floor.
Firefighters managed to save about two-thirds of the 700 units from fire damage. The first floor did not suffer any significant fire damage, a spokesman said.
