EUSTIS — Planning to jump in the car and take a road trip to grandma’s or cousin Billy’s for Thanksgiving? Police chief Fred Cobb is joining law-enforcement agencies nationwide with a simple message to those who get behind the wheel during the holiday: Buckle up.

Plain and simple, according to Cobb, seat belts work. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website calls them “the most effective means of reducing fatalities and serious injuries when traffic crashes occur and are estimated to save 9,500 lives in America each year.”

Also, the agency says, “Research has found that lap/shoulder belts, when used properly, reduce the risk of fatal injury to front seat passenger car occupants by 45 percent and the risk of moderate-to-critical injury by 50 percent. For light truck occupants, seat belts reduce the risk of fatal injury by 60 percent and moderate-to-critical injury by 65 percent.”
