The combined domestic production of Toyota Motor Corp. and seven other Japanese carmakers fell 5.8 percent year on year to 771,945 units in February, down for the eighth month straight, data released by the companies says.

The results, released Wednesday, underscored that last April's consumption tax hike is still stifling demand for big ticket items such as cars, though the pace of decline in February was smaller than the 10.3 percent drop in January.

Five automakers, including Japan's top three — Toyota, Nissan Motor Co. and Honda Motor Co. — said their domestic production fell from the previous February.
