Auburn wins kickoff Bowl

LINCOLNSHIRE — Auburn A swept through nine opponents to win the Illinois High School Scholastic Bowl Coaches Association Kickoff Tournament Saturday at Stevenson High School.

The kickoff event was one of eight Scholastic Bowl kickoffs held around the state. Thirty-four teams competed at Stevenson.

Auburn’s victory qualified the Knights for the NAQT national tournament in May as well as the Illinois State NAQT tournament in February. Cole Timmerwilke and Evan Pandya, both of Auburn, made the all-tournament team. Brad McLain, playing for Auburn B, also made the all-tournament team.

Auburn B came in seventh, qualifying for the Illinois NAQT tournament and just missed qualifying for the NAQT national.

Here are the results from the IHSSBCA Kickoff Tournaments involving area schools, all held this past Saturday, Nov. 22. This was a Scholastic Bowl (not Quiz Bowl) event sponsored by the state coaches’ association, held at 8 sites around the state.

Auburn A defeated Auburn B 690-100, Buffalo Grove A 550-140, Savannah, Missouri 560-200, IMSA B 580-125, Metea Valley A 460-260, Barrington A 525-275, Stevenson A 575-235, Palatine Fremd A 420-285 and IMSA A 465-305.

Auburn’s record is 17-0 in Scholastic Bowl events, 22-3 in Quiz Bowl events and 39-3 overall. The differences in Scholastic Bowl and Quiz Bowl are related to number of players and rules.

In the kickoff tournament at Keith Country Day School in Rockford, Sterling Newman won with an 11-0 record. Belvidere North was second with 9-2. Boylan (7-3) finished third and Keith (6-4) was fourth. Newman and North qualified for the NAQT national tournament and the NAQT state tournament. Boylan and Keith also qualified for the state tournament.
