NAVI MUMBAI: In a first, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation will be commercially supplying recycled water from its sewage treatment plant (STP) at Nerul to a Seawoods cooperative housing society this week onwards.
Seawoods CHS, also known as NRI phase II, took the initiative to use treated water for its gardens, washing cars and lobbies of the 11 towers housing 660 flats.
STP water will be pumped into the sprawling campus for a trial run on Friday and become fully operational from Saturday.
Ranjit Singh, secretary of the society, said, "It will save us around 8 to 10 MLD of precious drinking water and also cut cost. Besides expenses, we will be able to save drinking water for more families. The saved amount of drinking water can supply around 400 families at around 800 litres per day for a family of four."
Pipelines have been connected to the gardens. "The pipeline has been connected from the STP across the Palm Beach Road to an underground tank in our society. We have installed a pump to the tank to supply water to the gardens and an overhead tank from where it can be accessed at various points through taps to wash vehicles, clean lobbies and other common areas."
