Ten homes in Allentown were evacuated Wednesday afternoon after reports of a strong odor of natural gas in the area, fire officials said.

Calls came in around 2 p.m. for the odor in the 600 block of North New Street, said Allentown Fire Capt. John Christopher.

He said both fire crews and UGI officials received positive readings on gas meters, including some in areas where manhole covers had been popped.

A Lanta bus was brought in to help keep the displaced residents warm, Christopher said.

By 4 p.m., Christopher said UGI crews remained on scene and had opened up a section of the street to try and determine where the leak occurred. The gas levels in the homes had dropped and Christopher said the residents would soon be permitted to return.

No injuries were reported.
