MONTREAL – School board officials confirmed Friday that thousands of people who were initially blocked from the voters list, are back on.

Quebec English School board Executive Director Marcus Tabachnick says voters have been manually re-added to the Lester B. Pearson School board’s list ahead of the Nov. 2 elections.

“Voting is the cornerstone of our democracy. This is not about school boards, it is a much more basic issue of democratic rights,” explained Tabachnick.

This year many voters suddenly found themselves kicked off of the list, even though they’d gone through the process of making sure they were added.

The situation is fixed for the upcoming election, but there’s still a lot of work to be done before a permanent solution is in place.

“Definitely not fixed,” said Tabachnick. “We will need cooperation from the government and the Directeur general des elections. We start right after these elections and hopefully will have a solution before the next elections.”
