Auburn finishes second, looks to SEC Tournament

After what looked like another easy weekend sweep for Auburn, the LSU Tigers snatched the win, 7-1 to end the last game of the regular season.

But this win wouldn’t be just a normal win for the Tigers. With the announcement made mid-game that Missouri beat Florida, Auburn’s win over LSU would put the team in the top spot for the regular season title. Unfortunately, LSU was successful in keeping that from happening.

Auburn wasn’t able to take a strong lead starting out, with no runs until the top of the second when Tiffany Howard scored Haley Fagan off of a single to centerfield.

The defense held its own with a double play in the bottom of the second and third, but LSU was able to plate six runs the next two innings to stretch the lead, 6-1. LSU would then score later in the bottom of the sixth.

Auburn’s chance to answer never came as they pushed to come back in the top of the sixth and seventh, but LSU’s Carley Hoover was on fire, pitching 12 strikeouts in this game alone.

Although Auburn didn’t end its season on a high note, the Tigers defied the odds and finished second heading into the SEC Tournament, when it was predicted they would take the seventh spot. This second placement is a program best.

It was a close one.

In the second game of the series against SEC west foe LSU, the Auburn softball team pulled out a 1-0 win to take the series.

Auburn will now prepare for the SEC Tournament where it will start by facing the winner of the Missouri, Mississippi State game at 10 am Thursday, May 7.
